Uma das coisas mais legais no Kruger são os abrigos (hides), nos quais podemos observar os animais sem ser vistos, em meio à savana, se ficarmos quietos. Este é o abrigo Ratelpan, na Roodewal Road (S39), na região central do parque. Nestes pontos, podemos descer do carro (algo proibido na maioria do parque), após verificar se não há animais por perto. Supostamente vimos que não havia animais, descemos na maior tranquilidade, para tirar fotos em frente ao abrigo, como esta de Carol, tirada no dia 08/01/2011. Mas, se tivéssemos visto o que estava pelas redondezas, não teríamos tanta tranquilidade...
One of the nicest things in the Kruger are the hides, where we can observe animals in the middle of the savana while they don't see us, if we stay quiet. This is the Ratelpan hide, in the Roodewal Road (S39), in the central region of the park. In these places, we can leave the car (something prohibited in most parts of the park), after checking whether there are no animals around. We supposedly saw there were no animals, and left the car calmly, even taking pictures in front of the hide, as this pic of Carol, taken in Jan 8th 2011. But if we had seen what was in the surroundings, we wouldn't be so calm...
Mal havíamos sentado no banquinho dentro do abrigo, arrumando nossas câmeras, e vimos um animal oculto entre a folhagem entrando no rio. Certamente, enquanto descíamos tranquilos do carro, parando para tirar fotos, ele estava bem próximo, ao lado mesmo...
We have just sat at the bench inside the hide, arranging our cameras, and we saw an animal hidden amongst the foliage entering the river. Surely, while we were calmly leaving the car, stopping to take pictures, he was quite close, just besides us...
Aí está o animal que quase encontramos na porta do abrigo em Ratelpan: Um Elefante Africano (Loxodonta africana) (Blumenbach, 1797), não exatamente um animal que você quer encontrar a pé, em meio à savana africana.
Here is the animal we almost found at the door of the hide in Ratelpan: An African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) (Blumenbach, 1797), not exactly an animal you want to meet on foot in the middle of the African savana.
Tivemos o enorme prazer de presenciar esta cena. O Elefante tomou banho diante de nós, bem próximo de onde estávamos, durante vários minutos, enquanto assistíamos extasiados.
We had the huge pleasure of seeing this scene. The Elephant took a bath in front of us, quite close to where we were, during several minutes, while we watched in extasy.
Aproveitando seu banho, ele chegava a deitar de lado dentro do rio. Não parou por aí, no entanto. Este Elefante ainda reservava muito para nós!
Enjoying his bath, he even laid in his side inside the river. But this was not the end. This Elephant was reserving a lot for us!
Terminado seu banho, o Elefante atravessou o rio Timbavati para alimentar-se do outro lado. Havia nas imediações 30 Hipopótamos. Ao verem o Elefante aproximando-se, eles começaram a sair de perto, em fila indiana, um após o outro. Como diz Carol, o Leão pode até ser o rei da selva, mas o Elefante é o dono!
After he finished bathing, the Eléphant crossed the Timbavati River to feed on the other side. There were 30 Hippos around. When they saw the Elephant getting closer, they started moving away, in a single file. As Carol says, the Lion can be the king of the jungle, but the Elephant is the owner!
O Elefante não estava dando a mínima para eles. Mesmo assim, os Hipopótamos acharam melhor não ficar por perto.
The Elephant was not giving a damn about them. Still, the Hippos found it better not to stay around
O Elefante estava muito mais preocupado em comer. Após alimentar-se por alguns minutos, ele se retirou do rio. Não seria a última vez que o veríamos. Notem ao fundo a Cegonha-de-bico-amarelo (Yellow-Billed Stork, Mycteria ibis) (Lineu, 1766).
The Elephant was much more interested in eating. After feeding for some minutes, he left the river. It wouldn't be the last time we saw it. Notice in the background a Yellow-Billed Stork (Mycteria ibis) (Linnaeus, 1766).
Após deixarmos o abrigo em Ratelpan, seguimos pela S39, Roodewal Road, e, para nossa surpresa, reencontramos, poucos metros após o abrigo, o mesmo elefante, na beira do rio Timbavati, em frente a um bando de Hipopótamos. Desta vez, ele ficou distante e os Hipopótamos ficaram em paz no meio do rio.
After we left the hide in Ratelpan, we followed the S39, Roodewal Road, and, for our surprise, we found the same elephant once again, a few meters from the hide, at the margin of the Timbavati River, in front of a group of Hippos. This time he stayed at a distance and the Hippos could remain in peace in the middle of the river.
E então ele nos agraciou com mais um banho no rio. Não podíamos acreditar na sorte de ver a cena novamente!
And then he pleased us with another bath in the river. We couldn't believe the luck we had for seeing this scene once again!
Era um animal magnífico, erguendo-se da água para lançá-la sobre seu corpo.

O elefante alça sua tromba mais para o alto, uma última visão antes de irmos adiante!
